DESCRIPTION:AXIS Contemporary Art: Featuring\nNew Axis Artist\, Stev'nn\
 nHall\, Toronto\nSTEV'NN HALL\nMixed-media Artist\nStev&rsquo\;nn Hall&r
squo\;s\nwork represents a collision between two worlds &ndash\; where p
hotography meets\npainting and earth meets sky. Photography\, Oil paint\
 , ink\, wax\, varnish and\nvinyl latex all conspire to create a common g
round where two disciplines\ncoalesce. Both painting and photography\, s
eparately and together\, exist in one\nmoment to create a balance and un
ion of elements &ndash\; and its in this moment that\nwe&rsquo\;re are o
ffered a glimpse of what might lie at that unattainable and\nmetaphysica
 l telemetry.\nIn Horizon\, Stev&rsquo\;nn invites us to look past\nour f
oreground to an infinite point beyond &ndash\; an unreachable vanishing
point\nthat divides above from below\, offers untold possibility\, and
 grants us\nthe perspective to chart our future bearing.\nA R T I S T S\
 nT A T E M E N T / B I O\nThe artwork of Stev&rsquo\;nn Hall is limned w
ith the light and memory of\nhalf-forgotten days and places. Scenes scar
red by the neglect of time yet still\nvaluable\, as essential as the mem
ory of innocence to our older selves. Hall\ngrew up in rural Ontario &ld
 quo\;with a 35mm camera\nin one hand and a paintbrush in the other&rdquo
\;. After studying Film Production at Concordia University in Montreal a
nd then working as\nan award-winning television producer\, Hall began th
inking about something from\nhis past and decided to follow it back - to
travel that road again but in a\ndifferent direction. That is the origi
n of his photographic work.\nThese are places seen by a boy riding backs
eat\nin the car\, his eyes still half in love with sky. You pass them by
  - farm\nfields and overpasses and front yards full of yesterday&rsquo\;
s plans &ndash\; and yet they\nhave a way of staying whole in your head.
The photographs themselves seem a bit\nspellbound. There is a purposefu
l\nfeeling of motion in the work\, a cinematic unspooling of awareness.\
nHe roughs up the work with sharp brushstrokes\nand personal scratchings
which connect the images to more private associations. They&rsquo\;re b
led through with the ambient\nlight of 1970s cheap camera photography\,
all that crackling at the edges as if\nthe pictures were stained by whis
key. Through his photographs\, Hall\nreworks his idea of the past into h
is present.Through looking back Hall finds\nhis way forward.
